Hilarious story from London - esp since Gordon Brown wants to make swimming free for all before the 2012 Olympics.

The Google Earth gatecrashers who take uninvited dips in home-owners’ swimming pools| News | This is London

Would-be revellers are using satellite images on the internet to find houses with swimming pools - and then turning up uninvited for an impromptu dip.

The craze involves using the Google Earth programme, which provides high-quality aerial photos of Britain and other countries.

Once a target is chosen, the organisers use social networking sites such as Facebook and Bebo to arrange to meet, say police.

A potential target? A pool in the back garden of a house in Dorset as seen on Google earth

Officers said that residents have woken up to find youngsters ‘dipping’ in their back gardens, or have come home from work to a swimming pool full of beer cans.

One group has already boasted on the internet that it held an event earlier this week.

Sixteen people are said to have gatecrashed two pools near Bournemouth.

The rules of ‘dipping’ often include wearing fancy dress and participants are urged to ‘bring a bike’ to escape if discovered.

There are fears that the craze could spread across the UK as the weather improves and pool owners leave their homes unattended while on holiday.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said yesterday: ‘We are advising owners of swimming pools to be on their guard.

‘We would also warn prospective swimmers that using someone else’s pool is trespassing and therefore illegal.’

The group responsible for organising Monday’s ‘dipping’ session listed a specific meeting place, a midnight to 3am duration and mobile telephone numbers for the organisers.

Although there were only 16 confirmed participants at the ‘event’, invitations were sent to more than 500 users on Facebook.

Comments left by admirers of the group suggested that the craze could be spreading.

One message reads: ‘You crazy lot and your crazy antiks (sic). Don’t think I can make it but maybe I can do it on my own in London.’

Social networking sites such as MySpace have previously caused trouble for families after private parties advertised online have been gatecrashed by hordes of unruly teenagers.

A £4million mansion in Marbella last month became the latest home to be invaded by uninvited guests, when they gatecrashed a girl’s 16th birthday party.

Is Yahoo Blocking Facebook Mail? or Gmail?

Yo mama's so ugly she could scare the chrome off a bumper!

I know things are tough for Yahoo these days, but is marking competitors’ email as Spam the way to go? I have a Gmail account that forwards a copy of my mail to my Yahoo email account. It’s my cheap psuedo-redundancy setup. Normally this works fine, but it seems that, starting today, I’m getting mails sent from Facebook bounced back from Yahoo under the auspices of a email abuse.
Technical details of permanent failure:

PERM_FAILURE: SMTP Error (state 16): 554 Message not allowed - UP Email not accepted for policy reasons. Please visit http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/defer/defer-04.html[120]

Utterly useless. So I google search for the error text and come up with this gem:

554 Message type not allowed. UP Email not accepted for policy reasons

If you receive an SMTP error or bounce message containing the text string

UP Email not accepted for policy reasons. Please visit http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/defer/defer-04.html

there is something about the message contents that Yahoo! Mail will not accept for policy reasons. For instance, it is against Yahoo! Mail’s policy to send phishing/fraud attempts or viruses. If you feel you have received this error for a message that should be accepted, we encourage you to provide us with detailed information about the rejected message.

Nice to see that it’s now policy to reject email from your competitors. I had a similar problem last year where none of my G-Mail would get through to Lauri’s Yahoo mail. But that seemed to have been fixed. Let’s hope this is just a blip on the radar.

Another Nail In Palm’s Coffin?

It seems that Palm has yet another iceberg hitting the ship. It’s not enough that they sold their historic PalmOS to Access, then refused to implement ALP (Access Linux Platform), their next gen version of Palm OS, opting to instead work on its own. It’s not enough that they wasted an entire year and a half on the Foleo project which was shelved shortly before it’s release - and after mass production. It’s not enough that their new Linux-based OS is a project that won’t see the light of day until early 2009. But now it seems Access is giving away the old PalmOS to whoever is buying. They’ve just introduced a PalmOS emulator for Nokia’s Internet Tablets:

ACCESS, the people who purchased the spin off of the software division of a once healthy company known as Palm, are announcing the release of a beta virtual machine that will allow people who own a Nokia 770, N800 and N810 to run Garnet applications. The VM will be out by the end of the year, for free. Breathing life into Maemo by enabling Palm application to run? It just might work Johny. It certainly solves the lack of PIM issue in one swift move.

Meanwhile all the attention for the future of the Mobile OS market has shifted to Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android platform while Windows Mobile and Blackberry units are entrenched in corporate IT departments. If Access allows an avenue for the thousands of PalmOS applications to be run on Nokias, iPhones, and other platforms, would there really be any compelling reason to stick with the Palm Treo or to wait on their next gen os?
