Wes Welker Needs An Economics Lesson

It’s an unwritten rule as a player that you don’t talk about another person’s contract. This is a sport with no guaranteed contracts except for your signing bonus. Compared to other sports, it’s an owner’s dream not to have to be tied to an underachieving star for 7 years (*cough*Barry*Zito*cough*). And with a salary cap in place for years and still in place, it’s no wonder why the NFL is the most financially healthy league. It’s clear that players need to take theirs when and where they can.

So when the Pats’ Wes Welker said that “Asante Samuel Chose Money Over Championships” after he signed as a free agent with Philadelphia, a year after the Patriots refused to give him the kind of contracts they gave other free agents like Adalius Thomas - it brought back memories of Tiki Barber criticizing Michael Strahan over his contract negotiations:

Wes Welker vs Asante SamuelI was listening to ESPNRadio this morning, and the host mentioned that Wes Welker was quoted as saying something along the lines of, “He chose money over championships”, in reference to Asante Samuel’s six-year, $57M contract with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Osi Umenyiora was on the air, and said that he would have done the same thing, due to the fact that feeding his family comes first. This is a point of view that I just can’t wrap my head around.

Anybody who isn’t a professional athlete looks at a six-figure salary and considers it a dream (in some cases, a dream come true). These guys act like their families will go hungry if they don’t make millions of dollars every year. Can somebody explain this logic to me?

I understand that a person who chooses a career in professional sports has a time window that is much smaller than that of an IT technician or a nurse. You will not be celebrating 30 years with the company when you’re getting ready to retire.

But honestly…these guys make more in one year than most people’s 401k plan amounts to over the course of their entire life.

This topic even spills over into the debate about whether or not an athlete should stay in college until they have their degree. If these guys are so concerned about feeding their families, then why is it that they bet the bank on a long, prosperous career in sports?

Had you stayed in school and earned a degree, your time window would suddenly become a whole lot bigger, since you can go out and get a normal job once your career in sports has ended.

It’s all about Fair Market Value. If you can get it, you take it. If you don’t take it, then you’re a fool. This is a business just like any other business. The owners don’t ascribe to these warm-and-fuzzy ideals about going for championships over money - if they did they’d risk cap hell for a year or 2 to load up on free agents and make a run. Only Dan Snyder is dumb enough to try that.

What they know and what Wes Welker has yet to figure out (you know, since he DIDN’T win a championship) is - nothing is guaranteed in sports on the field. If Asante came back and Tom Brady broke his leg - what then? He would have lost his FMV AND his championship and what would Wes say then?

And who’s to say Philadelphia won’t have an easier time getting to the Super Bowl than New England? Their offense has been figured out, their defense is getting older in the back 7. Nothing is guaranteed. Except when you sign a contract.

The reason you leave college early is because you think you have a low risk of earning a high amount of money. It’s what you would do if you graduated college and had a set of job offers to choose from. Why is the decision different before or after graduation? In the unlikely case where something happens to impair a star athlete from making a large amount of money, they can always GO BACK to get that degree. It’s harder, yes, but it’s not impossible so as to render them useless.

It’s amazing how people think professional athletes should act any different than any high money earner in this country. I’m sure Steve Jobs and Dick Cheney want to “feed their families” as well.

Here’s Jim Rome’s take on it:

Proof that Bob Kraft and Roger Goodell are in bed together

Yo mama's so fat she got hit by a truck and asked "Who threw that rock?"

Interesting article from former player Ross Tucker about the other big revelation from the Spygate mess:

Basically, the Patriots would put a player on IR, knowing it meant he couldn’t play in a game or practice with the team for the remainder of the season. By skirting the rules and practicing him anyway, it allowed them to develop his skills during the year. A side benefit is that they were also able to give some of the older players less repetitions and, therefore, additional rest.

It’s apparent that none of Goodell’s “investigations” were thorough because it seems that it’s the media that are the ones doing most of the fact finding into the apparently high level of cheating that was going on in New England. And like steroids in baseball, it’s going to continue to trickle out and embarass both Goodell for his toothless punishments and the Patriots putting even more tarnish on what should have been one of the league’s greatest dynasties.

It’s fine for Goodell to want to “protect the shield” by going easy on the Pats, but then his penalties for the 49ers “tampering” with Lance Briggs (an incomplete phone call to Drew Rosenhaus) as well as the penalties he doles out to the players seem hollow and give the impression that he knows how deep Bill Belicheck’s rabbit hole goes and is unwilling to levy similarly harsh punishments against his buddy’s franchise. Perhaps it’s a matter of Kraft having signficant power be heading the league’s Television committee. Or perhaps all the owners subscribe to the “circle the wagons” mentality when it comes to problems. But one thing is for sure - if they don’t get ahead of this thing and use the offseason to offer a complete and thorough mea culpa, this story will never die and will take away from whatever the Patriots accomplish as well as other great stories from next season.

Yank that band-aid off, Roger.

Still Think the 72 Dolphins are Bitter?

Yo mama's so ugly the last time she heard a whistle was when she got hit by a train

Everyone hates them for being proud of their achievement. What’s more, they don’t get the schtick. They saw Mercury Morris on ESPN talking about being on his block, or whatever. By now everyone saw the Perfectville commercial that was released:

Perfectville

But they also made a version of the commercial that WOULD HAVE BEEN RELEASED if the Patriots had won.

Perfectville (UNRELEASED)

Now can we please stop falling into the media created traps that they have a champagne party everytime the last undefeated team loses. To date, it’s happened twice - once Sunday night and once back in the 90’s or 80’s. And if you still believe these guys are really bitter old men - you are being played.

It’s Giants vs Patriots in Super Bowl 42

Yo mama's so ugly when she walks in the kitchen, the rats jump on the table and start screaming.

Perfect PatriotsThe wind was making it hard to throw to the edges and Moss was being blanketed. But that didn’t stop the Patriots from finding other guys like Faulk and Moroney to put the gimpy Chargers out of their misery and come one step closer to making Mercury Morris eat his words.

The Chargers were too inept on offense - settling for too many FGs, and too vanilla on defense. That’s not the way to beat the Patriots. What they should have done, and what I’d like to see in the Super Bowl, is for them to be defended with a 1 or 2 man line. Line up in a typical 4-man front with 1-2 blitzers threatening, then at the snap, drop off into coverage to clog the passing lanes. And when you rush the 2 guys, rush them from the same spot overloaded on one side. Remember the Pats did that to the Colts’ pass-happy offense to great effect a few years ago? Now it’s the Patriots that have the pass happy offense.

Honestly, you will not beat the Pats playing straight up D. You have to gamble and guess, morph and disguise. Otherwise Brady will always know what he’s looking at and always find a Faulk open - who looked like he was just finding the open space in the zone. Norv (or rather Ted Cottrell) simply got outcoached. It’s ok - only 2 or 3 teams really were an equal match coaching and strategy wise all season.

Tynes game winning FGThe worse scenario for the Pats today was having to play the Giants. They are now the hottest team not named the Patriots. The Chargers were crippled and they didn’t get creative. The Packers played well, but just not well enough. Eli Manning (not Peyton) played well down the stretch and and will be rewarded with a spot in the Super Bowl. Scotsman Lawrence Tynes overcame 2 missed kicks to end the game in overtime with a game winning kick.

But here’s what I like about this most. Tiki Barber is left to stew over the fact that he left an average team and they became a great team all the while fending off his barbs (pun intended) about Eli not being a good QB. Thats called the Ewing Theory, buddy. A high profile player leaves an underachieving team and they suddenly rally and achieve something. And since there are no more games on NBC Tiki won’t have to answer to it.

Well, I guess you could say the same thing about the Giants going on a run after Jeremy Shockey’s injury, but since he’s from The U I’ll leave him alone.
