@EPLTalk: “Sepp Blatter is a World Class Weenie.” Me: “You’re too nice”

The lack of accountability of FIFA as a whole and Sepp Blatter in particular is simply staggering.  In the world’s most popular sport, its leaders have somehow fashioned a deal which leaves them completely unaccountable to the fans that ultimately finance and support their organization.  I feel nothing but sorrow for the Togolese players who found themselves in a war zone through no fault of their own, and nothing but contempt for the twits who refuse to take responsibility and address this catastrophe.

Sepp Blatter is the definition of “rotten to the core” as you can see his poor leadership reflected in many of his regional underlings *cough*Jack Warner*cough*. As they say – shit rolls downhill.

Nations Cup throws spotlight on Cabinda’s troubled past – Yahoo! News

LUANDA (AFP) – The Angolan enclave of Cabinda is expected to deploy heavy security at its Chiazi stadium, when the country hosts the 2010 edition of the African Nations Cup starting Sunday.

Chelsea teammates Michael Essien and Didier Drogba will play the group stages there, one of four Cup venues in the country, but not all the security will be for the Premier League stars.

Oil-rich Cabinda, separated from the rest of Angola by the Democratic Republic of Congo, has been embroiled in a long-running independence struggle but will host the seven Nations Cup matches this month.

The conflict officially ended in a 2006 deal with the Front for the Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda (FLEC).

FLEC however has made several media claims in recent months about attacks on the military and foreign construction and oil workers based in the province.

According to Agostinho Chicaia of Mapablanda, Cabinda’s only human rights organisation, things have only gotten worse since the deal.

“Cabinda continues to be unstable, there is no peace,” he told AFP, saying the fighting has eased, but human rights abuses and arrests on security charges were increasing.

“The true peace is that which is born first in the hearts of people and in their consciences, and it’s a peace based on justice,” he said.

“The (agreement) has done nothing for justice, so now there is only a heightened tension.”

Mapablanda as well as US-based Human Rights Watch have documented abuses, including the case of Fernando Lelo, a former Voice of America journalist who last year was sentenced to 12 years in prison for national security offences.

Lelo spent two years behind bars but was later acquitted.

“Cabinda is still living in a state of war today,” he told AFP. “The fact that we present ourselves as defenders of human rights… we’ve been targeted for arbitrary detentions and persecutions.”

Antonio Bento Bembe, the former FLEC leader who signed the peace deal that has now made him a government minister, disputes the claims of abuses.

“What these people are saying is not true,” said Bento Bembe, a minister without portfolio in charge of human rights. “These people are just using Human Rights Watch to get publicity.

“It would be good to recognise the efforts being made by the government, not only to speak critically.”

The one-time rebel bush fighter has also dismissed concerns that Cabinda was not a good location for the Nations Cup, which runs to January 31 with games also taking place in the capital Luanda, Benguela and Luango provinces.

“Cabinda is safe and security there is guaranteed,” he said. “The Cup of Nations is an opportunity for Cabinda to receive visitors and it will bring money and investment to the province.”

The minister denied tensions in the enclave, but the December arrests there of a French and an Angolan journalist doing a story about the tournament has re-stoked concerns.

According to Human Rights Watch, the pair were detained because one took a photograph of the new Chinese-built football stadium, and they were taken to several military and police garrisons where they were questioned and then released without charge five hours later.

“The Africa Cup of Nations is an opportunity for Angola to showcase its progress after years of debilitating civil war,” said Georgette Gagnon, Africa director at Human Rights Watch.

“But by arbitrarily arresting and intimidating journalists, Angolan officials draw attention to how far the country still has to go.”

The 20,000-seat Chiazi stadium will host Group B – Ghana, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Togo – in the tournament.

The Nations Cup is seen as the starter to a 2010 African football feast whose main course comes in June with the World Cup in South Africa — the first time international football’s biggest competition has ever been held on the continent.

Only politics would influence a decision to play important soccer matches in a tiny exclave with security concerns, a history of imprisoning journalists, and a shaky civil war peace pact.

Mike Gundy is MAD!!

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy’s tirade against a reporter from The Oklahoman who was critical of former starting QB Bobbi Reid is probably the best college coaching meltdown since Dan Hawkins “It’s Division One Football!” rant from last season. He was so mad, that if you didn’t read the whole story you wouldn’t know his team pulled out a great shootout win over Big 12 rival Texas Tech.

Wow! She called him out for being a wimp, coddled and fed chicken. Kinda harsh for a college player but the Newspaper business needs eyeballs too. You can’t let Tiki Barber have all the fun. Of course after such a verbal berating – the columnist has to fight back, right?

A newspaper columnist for The Oklahoman on Tuesday defended her reporting on a story that prompted a tirade by Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy. Jenni Carlson, in a column on the front page, maintained the accuracy of an earlier column critical of the Cowboys’ former starting quarterback.

“I will not stand on the sidelines and allow someone to attack my credibility,” she said.

Carlson’s column Saturday suggested Bobby Reid’s demotion was a result of his attitude more than his ineffective play. It stated that Reid, who lost his starting job two games ago, had not always handled his nerves well and his slow starts put the Cowboys in some early holes, including some they dug out of with Reid “wielding the biggest shovel.”

It also called Reid the “most talented quarterback” on the team and indicated Reid was “nicked in some games and sat it out instead of gutting it out.” Following Oklahoma State’s 49-45 win over Texas Tech, Gundy used his postgame news conference to berate Carlson and left the room without taking questions.

On Saturday, Gundy called three-fourths of the column “fiction.” During Gundy’s news conference Monday, Carlson asked the coach to point out what he thought were factual errors.

The tirade was awesome and it’s great that he wants to defend his players from allegedly shotty reporting. But I wonder if she wasn’t a woman reporter – would have been as loud and forceful with his comments – and if there would have been the same reaction from the gallery. No doubt there’s still a stigma attached to women reporters in sports.

“It just happened because of my feelings for the team and the players and I just felt like it wasn’t the right thing,” Gundy said. “I certainly didn’t do it to receive recognition and I certainly don’t want it to take away from this upcoming game like it unfortunately took away from the last game for the team.”The situation has drawn more attention than the result of the game, which included more than 1,300 yards of offense and Tech’s Graham Harrell throwing for the fourth-highest total in major college football history.

“I thought it was more important that somebody stand up for a player who couldn’t stand up for himself,” Gundy said.

Football Writers Association of America president Mike Griffith called Gundy’s behavior “completely inappropriate” and suggested the matter “could have been handled in a more private and appropriate matter.”

The Association for Women in Sports Media said Monday night that Gundy handled the situation in an “unprofessional manner,” and while he has a right to his opinion “his decision to air his objections in the form of a personal attack shows a lack of respect for all journalists.”

We’ll see how this affects his team going forward. Surely Reid now has all the motivation he needs to prove his doubters wrong. But if he doesn’t, he’s hopefully getting a great education in Stillwater! How ’bout them Cowboys!

Lloyd Carr should be fired tomorrow at 8am

This guy is a classic Larry Coker. He had glory early and has managed to underwhelm ever since. And the only reason he’s still around is because of that 1997 title. Miami came to their senses and fired Coker last season. Michigan could have done the same to Lloyd Carr after being embarassed in their bowl game with USC. But did the (some would say) honorable thing hoping Lloyd would rally and come out smoking this season.

They only delayed the inevitable.

Where the heck is Appalachian State? Yeah, I know that they’ve won a couple of Division 1-AA national championships. But, what can any villager tell me what state is the home of the Appalachian State Mountaineers?

It is depressing to be a fan of the University of Michigan.

My favorite team managed again to find a way to lose. Not just lose … but, to be embarrassed as the first Division 1 ranked team to lose to a Division 1-AA team in the history of college football. They have been playing college football for over a hundred years. What are the odds that your team can become the first in centuries to lose in a certain way?

Oh dear. Every now and then a big team plays a cupcake and has a close game. But at home? to a I-AA team? In a make-or-break season for the coach? Methinks that Lloyd and the Wolverines are done for the year. The only way they can salvage this season is to fire him first thing Monday morning and promote the offensive co-ordinator.

Hail Hail to Victory, indeed!

Nick Saban, Mercenary For Hire

Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer wrote in Truth is, college coaches should stay put

Gee, Nick Saban lied… imagine that! After all, why let the truth get in a way of a darn good scam?

The purpose of this column is not to simply bash the Napoleanic gnome — a man who can’t seem but to lie, only to angrily bully his inquisitors as if they should be physically afraid of him. Sure, we can go on and on about how the Nicktator took one of the game’s classiest owners and cleaned his clock. After all the times Saban acted like he was going to kick another man’s butt, after all the times he verbally undressed and humiliated others, he’d finally gotten the better of a man.But Wayne Huizenga? Never saw that coming. At the very least we thought he’d get a ball boy or even the little dude who worked for the Jets who Bill Polian jacked up in the tunnel. But Wayne Huizenga? The same Wayne Huizenga regarded as one of the best and most loyal owners in the NFL?

So let this column act as a memo to all owners out there looking to delve deep into the coaching search to pluck out the next great hope: DO NOT GO TO THE COLLEGE RANKS FOR YOUR NFL HEAD COACH!!!

All I can say is that Nick Saban will have the ultimate comeuppance when those same Bama fans that shook his hand and tried to tongue kiss him on the tarmac end up running his ass out of town because he went 7-5 and lost to Auburn. 5 coaches in 10 seasons? Can you fault Franchione from busting out – he saw the hatchet coming.

He will not be missed in Miami because he made no progress here despite what he says. Some might say he even regressed in certain areas from year one to year two. Hopefully Huizenga quits trying to hire the big name coach with sizzle and goes after an assistant who understands the NFL and the commitment required – and maybe instead of trying to assess that himself, let someone with some experience (successful experience) in hiring a head coach actually take on that role. I have no idea why he’s so allergic to having a strong GM.

And to Nick – well your wife is away from multicultural Miami now and back where she can lord her position as coach’s wife over all the townfolk in BFE. Enjoy it while you can. But in the mean time – War Eagle.

The Bears are who WE thought they were…

But we DIDN’T let them off the hook!

For all the interceptions, first down granting penalties, and missed FGs, I can’t say how awesome it is that we came out and not only defended our undefeated season, but also hopefully turned the corner this season.

Ronnie Brown was a freakin BEAST!!!! and the line was out of it’s mind. I don’t remember any false starts! And for all the bad things I say about Harrington, he stepped up and made some key plays today.

And I don’t even have to mention team leader Jason Taylor. Let’s hope HE keeps THIS up.

GREAT win for the Dolphins.
