Reno detective propositioned by alleged prostitute while on duty
A veteran Reno police homicide detective was trying to find a murder suspect Tuesday when an alleged prostitute jumped inside his unmarked police vehicle — oblivious to the blaring police radio and interior emergency lights — and made a deal for sex.
After Det. David Jenkins identified himself as a police officer, he said he had to restrain Mercedes Green by grabbing her hair to defend her punches to his face. When Jenkins grabbed her hair, he discovered that it was an orange wig, which came off when he pulled it.
Green, a 19-year-old single mother from Oakland, was booked Tuesday into the Washoe County Jail on suspicion of solicitation of prostitution.
Jenkins had been wearing a suit and tie while sitting in an unmarked police car looking for a suspect in a recent murder, according to his arrest affidavit. He said he saw Green attempting to solicit herself for prostitution, so he pulled up alongside her hoping his obvious police presence would make her leave.
Instead, she got inside his car and asked “You’re not the police, are you?,” the affidavit said. He said “what do you think,” and she replied “I didn’t think so.”
Jenkins said Green had to talk very loudly to be heard over his police radio, which was blaring in the background. His police laptop was also open and sitting between them. He said his emergency lights were plainly visible to Green, who appeared to be looking at them.
Green answered $100 when Jenkins asked “how much?,” the affidavit said. While fondling his clothed genitalia she said the money would get him “anything you want.”
But her mood changed after Jenkins told her he was a cop. He said she screamed and flailed her left fist around trying to strike him in the face. She knocked his glasses off.
After he pulled her wig off, she ran out of the car and was stopped by another officer who arrested her. Jenkins said in his affidavit that Green appeared shocked to learn he was an on duty officer and had been convinced he was just “freak.”
“You wear glasses and I didn’t think police could wear them,” she told him.
Green, whose been arrested in California for prostitution, told police that her mother was aware that she was in Reno to prostitute herself while her mother baby sat her 2-year-old son.
