iPhones – the new Blood Diamonds

Chinese newspaper Southern Weekly sent 20-year-old reporter Liu Zhi Yi undercover in Foxconn’s factory in Shenzhen, China. For 28 days, he experienced dreadful conditions that the factory’s 400,000 employees endure, churning out iPods, iPads, and iPhones for Apple nonstop.

There’s no doubt about it. The Foxconn suicides were caused by job stress. Within half a year, there have been nine suicides attempts with seven confirmed deaths at Foxconn’s Shenzhen factory, prompting the company to hire counselors and even Buddhist monks to free the souls of the suicidal from purgatory.

Foxconn is one of Apple’s main manufacturer contractors. Thousands of Mac minis, iPods, iPhones and iPads are assembled daily in the Shenzhen factory, which runs 24/7.

After a sixth suicide attempt in April, Southern Weekly—described by The New York Times as China’s most influential liberal newspaper—sent an young reporter to sneak into the factory as a worker. At the same time, they sent a senior reporter to talk with Foxconn’s executives. Their mission: To discover what’s really going on in that factory, and find out the true reasons behind the suicides.

During his 28 days of investigation, Liu Zhi Yi was shocked to discover how the factory workers live in a sort of indentured servitude. They work all day long, stopping only to quickly eat or to sleep. They repeat the same routine again and again except on public holidays. Liu surmised that for many workers, the only escape from this cycle was to end their life.

Liu, a graduate student, was chosen because of his young age, since the factory only hires workers in their twenties. He was hired without issue. He signed only one special document: An overtime working agreement that says the company is not responsible for their long hours of working. According to Liu, this voluntary agreement overrules Chinese state regulation.

Foxconn workers only smile on the 10th of every month. That’s the day when they get their salaries. That day, the ATM machines inside the factory are crowded with workers. Their monthly salaries start at 900 Chinese Yuan—about $130.

Most of the workers had nothing to say about the popular Apple products they assemble. Most can’t afford to own an Apple product. Their salaries can only buy them knockoff versions. While gadget aficionados worldwide discuss which iPhone they should buy, Foxconn workers debate the merits of differing knockoffs.

Tales from the factory

Liu had his most interesting chats with other workers during meals. Some told him that they envied workers who are sick. They get leave approvals and can get some rest. They also discussed about accidents in the factory: One worker got his finger cut-off during production. A few workers think that the machines are cursed. They believe it’s dangerous for them to use the machines.

Another worker spoke about one of the favorite activities in the factory lines: He likes to drop stuff on the floor. Why? Workers spend achingly up to eight hours standing up, so they feel that squatting down to grab a fallen object is the most restful moment of their working day.

Workers call their warehouse trolleys their “BMWs”. While pulling them around, stacked high with tons of goods, they imagine the real BMW they hope to one day own.

According to one worker, they can’t live without these dreams. They dream of becoming rich one day. Some spend part of their salaries buying lottery tickets and betting on horse races.

There are other kind of dreams too. Liu says that some of them complain about their love lives. They just can’t find lovers in that environment, so they have to find alternatives: In some internet cafes—hiding in restaurants outside the factory—young men can buy access to clandestine porn videos. However, the men say that the movies get boring after long periods of time.

Many wouldn’t talk of the suicides. Others joked about it. One of the problems may be the lack of communication and friendships between work colleagues. Many workers don’t even know the names of the people working next to them. In fact, according to Southern Weekly, the workers find difficult to relate to each other because they are always wearing identical work uniforms and performing the same tasks everyday. They have no interesting topics to chat about because all they do is work. If an employee becomes too stressed, they often have no one with which to share their feelings or to approach for help solving their problems.

Perhaps the 100 counselors hired by Foxconn will help. I wish they had movie theaters and shopping malls inside to help them relax. But, at the end, the most important thing is that Foxconn really needs to be more human and be concerned about the health—mental and physical—of their workers, instead of treating them like dogs.

Well, at least they get to beat up plastic dummies. And we wonder why our jobs have gone away.

Deception As Business Practice [Apple’s attack on Adobe Flash, it’s all about online video.]

Filed under: Apple, Mac, Randomness, Tech, iPhone — Tags: , , , , , , , — webadmin @ 6:56 pm

In conclusion, as a developer who likes Flash, to tell the truth, I can respect the business decision by Steve to not allow Flash on their iTechnology platforms for good old competitive reasons.  What is wrong here is that Apple is on a campaign of deception.  They are not happy to not use flash, but are also producing FUD to displace Flash as a relevant web technology.

As a Apple user who may be reading this blog entry (And congratulations if you got this far), consider your relationship with your Apple products.  You have just been told your friend is deceptive and will lie to you to get what he wants from you.  How would this go down if this was your partner or best friend?

Apple As An Exclusive Country Club

Filed under: Apple, Google, Mac, Randomness, Tech, iPhone — Tags: , , , , , , , — webadmin @ 6:53 pm

With the iPhone and the iPad, Apple has either smartly or stupidly drawn a line in the sand and declared themselves no longer just the arbiters of hardware and system UI but arbiters of content and commerce as well. If you want to develop or produce content for Apple’s ecosystem, you will do exactly as Apple tells you to do. If you want to enjoy Apple’s products as a consumer, you’ll enjoy every freedom Apple provides and live with every limitation they impose. It’s like a country club. Apple isn’t saying you can’t play golf with your pit-stained t-shirt and denim cutoffs. They’re just saying you can’t do it at their club. Apple wants to run the most profitable country club in the world, with millions of members, but they don’t want everybody; and therein lies the difference between how their resurgence is playing out and how Microsoft’s dominance ultimately played out.

Rumor: The Apple Newton 2?

Filed under: Apple, Internet Tablet, Mac, Newton, Tech, UMPC, iPhone — Tags: , , , , , , — webadmin @ 8:33 am

Holy device-plsion, Batman. Rumors are out there that Apple are out to bring me back in the fold with a new Newton! OK they don’t call it that, but I will. Oh – and they’re also supposedly coming out with an iPhone Nano or something.

New Apple Gizmos Coming Exclusively to Verizon? – PC World

The other is a “media pad” that has the same functionality as an iPod Touch — music, games, photos — but with HD video and calling ability via a Wi-Fi connection. Sources tell Business Week that the device will be smaller than the Kindle 2, but with a larger touchscreen, paving the way for more speculation about Apple slinking into the eBook market. This might be the Apple Tablet everybody has been talking about.

“The media pad category might go to Verizon,” a witness told Business Week. “We are talking about a device where people will say, ‘Damn, why didn’t we do this?’ Apple is probably going to define the damn category.”

All signs point to a burgeoning deal between Verizon and Apple because, 1) Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam told Business Week that he has spoken to Steve Jobs within the past six months even though Jobs is on medical leave; 2) Business Week isn’t the type of publication to spread rumors; and 3) if Verizon wants Apple products, new products must be developed. Apple isn’t about to renege on its iPhone exclusive deal with AT&T, and the current iteration of the iPhone is on a GSM network and won’t function on Verizon’s CDMA network.

to be fair to the amazed witness, the “media pad” has been around in all shapes and forms before this: The Tablet PC, the UMPC, the Intel MID reference design, the PSP, EEE PC, the PMP and the iPod Touch. Even Microsoft’s Table PC! But because it’s Apple – it’s a whole nother genre. To the victor goes the history writing.

iPhone 3G Panic

iTunes activation servers go down, iPhone 3G customers being sent home unactivated, first-gen iPhone customers stuck with dead iPhones – Engadget

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

In a repeat of last year’s problems, it looks like the insane demand for the iPhone 3G has taken its toll on Apple’s iTunes activation servers — that’s a picture of iTunes locking up in the Chicago AT&T flagship earlier this morning. We’re hearing that the servers are now definitely down after being intermittently active for the past few hours, and that customers are either being turned away or sent home from both Apple and AT&T stores to activate at home using iTunes. That’s especially interesting since it suggests that AT&T was insisting on in-store activation to thwart unlockers, but for right now the real news is that lots of eager iPhone 3G buyers are stuck with two useless phones, since upgrading from a first-gen unit disables the SIM. Ouch. We’ll keep you updated.

Update: Apple has confirmed to us that activation is down, and that customers are being asked to take the phone home and activate via iTunes later. We’re not sure what good that’ll do, since the servers are down no matter where you are, but Apple says it’s “working on a solution.” In the meantime, it looks like the new SIM works in first-gen units, so at least upgraders aren’t totally phone-deprived. Oh, and remember that updating a first-gen iPhone to 2.0 requires hitting the server as well, so if you haven’t taken the plunge we’d say hold off until this all gets sorted.

Update 2: In related news, those updating their first-gen iPhone to 2.0 are also getting caught in the activation shuffle, leaving some with bricked iPhones. In our test case, the activation servers came back up after about 45 minutes just long enough to get 2.0 running on our first-gen iPhone, but not all have been so lucky. Is your first-gen iPhone stuck in activation limbo from the update? Let us know.

Unbelievable. Karma.

This Is What’s Wrong With Apple

So let me get this straight. Apple creates a culture of limited options with this iPhone (no A2DP, no bluetooth sync, no SD slot, no cut-and-paste, among other issues) and when people in Canada get upset at Rogers for doing the same with their service plans,
Apple tries to feign disgust? Sounds verrrrry convenient to me.

Apple, disgusted with Rogers Wireless for dumping egregious service plans on would-be iPhone 3G buyers, has decided that its Canadian retail stores will have no part in helping the carrier market the new handset to customers, AppleInsider has learned.

Rogers iPhoneAs a result, Canadian Apple Retail stores won’t be selling the new 3G touchscreen phones come Friday, representatives for the Cupertino-based company said during a private conference call on Monday evening. Instead, it will be up to Rogers and its partner Fido to lock subscribers into steep 3-year contracts that require a minimum monthly payment of $60 for just 150 minutes, 75 text messages, and 400MB of data.

Calls to Canadian Apple retail stores early Tuesday confirmed the move once over. Although the majority of the of stores contacted by AppleInsider said they were still unsure whether they’d be selling the new iPhone, one representative ultimately confirmed that Rogers and its partner stores will be the only place to buy iPhone 3G come Friday. Canadian Apple retail stores will, however, have demo units on hand the same day.

Asked whether the decision not to sell the iPhone was a result of Rogers’ poor service offerings, the representative would only say that: “We have nothing to do with the service plans. Those are Rogers’ plans.”

It’s hard to believe that Apple would sign an exclusive distribution deal with Rogers and not have some inkling about what Rogers would charge for service – a very important factor in people buying Apple’s product. So you’re telling me – they had no idea and are disgusted? Gimme a break. A jailbreak.

Word of Apple’s abandonment of in-store sales comes just days after the company was reported to have sanctioned Rogers by diverting a significant amount of Canada’s iPhone 3G shipments to Europe as initial retribution. As a result, the Canadian carrier will likely receive only about 10 to 20 units per store, and therefore should “exercise caution” not to promise ample stock on launch day, people familiar with the matter have said.

Apple’s knee-jerk reaction is believed to have been further stimulated by public outrage on the part of Canadian consumers following the release of the local pricing plans. Always concerned with its image, the iPhone maker has watched nearly 50,000 of its loyal customers sign an anti-Rogers petition at ruinediphone.com, which has in turn sparked hundreds of potentially damaging reports on the matter by bloggers and members of the mainstream media.

This smacks of the whole Christian Dior/Sharon Stone issue or the Dunkin Donuts Rachel Ray kerfuffle – both of which marinated in the news cycle before the corporate benedicts turned tail and ran.

For its part, Rogers in official statements has attempted to justify the cost of its service and data plans by arguing that the “majority” of international iPhone carriers have capped data. As such, a spokesperson said Rogers believes its plans to be better than those of Orange France, for example, which include a 500MB ‘reasonable use’ limit versus the 2GB maximum on the top-tier Canadian iPhone plan that fetches $115 per month.

“Unlimited plans could end up costing customers more for what they don’t use,” the spokesperson said. “Our iPhone plans more than accommodate the vast majority of customers.”

Rogers is a convenient target because they have a long history of screwing over their customers – and given Canada’s physical and lifestyle closeness with the US – they were bound to catch flack for not being competitive with AT&T, but for Apple to say they had no idea is laughable. Apple didn’t get where it has gotten in the past 10 years by being stupid. If they really cared and knew Rogers was going to do this they would have either pushed harder for an unlimited plan (even if the rate was astronomical) or not done the deal at all and let folks do the same thing they do to get iPhones working on T-Mobile. Apple knew and this supposed rift isn’t fooling me – they’re getting a free pass on this one.
