Man Allegedly Steals Pole To Trade For Cash

MIAMI (CBS4) ? Imagine trying to strap a light pole, at least 30 feet long, to the roof of an Astro mini-van. Now imagine driving through busy downtown Miami traffic with that pole tied to your vehicle. That’s exactly what cops say Elio Valerio and a friend did just before they were pulled over.

With the economy dipping, scrap metal thefts and sales are on the rise, but this goes further than most people have ever seen. “I always see people come in and bring in all kinds of stuff, but never like this. This is ridiculous,” says Rita Castillo, who works near a scrap metal shop.

Valerio told police he found the pole, which belongs to Miami-Dade County, laying on the side of the road and strapped it to his van. Even better, Valerio was driving that vehicle with a suspended license. He managed to drive all the way from 83rd and Biscayne Boulevard to Northwest 7th Avenue and Northwest 21st Street. He did have some consideration for other motorists; he tied a red flag on each end of the pole.

The owner of Miami Recovery & Recycling says Valerio wanted several hundred dollars in cash for the pole. Another man, Joseph Moniz, tried to exchange a metal storm drain cover belonging to South Florida Water and Sewer.

Both men are facing felony charges of grand theft and dealing in stolen property. Valerio’s friend is facing charges for helping him take the light pole in the first place.

What a Dumbass

Reinforcing all the stereotypes of rural Mississippians.

The Green Bay Packers apparently had proof that Brett Favre made phone calls to Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress when they filed tampering charges against the Vikings for “inappropriate dialogue” with the quarterback.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, a source said Favre continued to use a Packers-issued cellphone after his retirement. When the team checked the phone records, there were “repeated calls to coach Brad Childress and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell.”

A Vikings spokesman said Tuesday that the club would have no comment about the Journal Sentinel report. The Vikings, if found guilty, could face penalties that include loss of draft picks and/or fines.

Indy Car Catfight

I don’t know what’s worse, the fact that Danica seems to do this for PR only, her “woe is me quote about being “popular” or the piss poor writing style of this Associated Press piece:

Danica Patrick’s now famous temper has flared once again. And this time, it led to a PG-rated version of “Girls Gone Wild” in the pits during a practice session for the Honda Indy 200.

For the second time this season, Patrick was angered by a competitor and she decided to take out her aggression by going over to her opponent’s pit area for a confrontation.

Danica Patrick vs Milka Duno

This time, the object of her ire was the other female driver in the IndyCar Series, Milka Duno.

According to a report on The Indianapolis Star’s Web site, Patrick marched over to the Dreyer & Reinbold Racing pit stall after the conclusion of Saturday’s morning practice at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course to complain about Duno’s driving. The Andretti-Green Racing driver was upset that Duno did not allow faster cars, notably Patrick’s No. 7 Motorola Dallara Honda, to pass her during the practice session.

Unlike the last time Patrick went to a competitor’s stall during the Indianapolis 500, she was not stopped by anybody — leading to a testy engage between the two women.

Video shows Duno telling Patrick to “go away” numerous times before the Venezuelan snapped a towel at Danica’s face twice, leading to foul language before the minute-long incident concluded.

“Unfortunately, things involving me tend to evolve,” Patrick said in the report. “I’m on the hot seat when I do something and when others do something (connected to me). It’s kind of the line that I walk because I’m popular.”
