More Evidence That The Today Show Sucks

I’ve made no secret of my disdain for Katie Couric and her Morning Show brand of “news,” replete with softball interviews, oversimplifications and gimmicks. So I laughed out loud when Engadget uncovered in 2 great clips that show just how crappy these shows really are. They make The Daily Show, nee, Weekend Update on SNL seem like Cronkite and Murrow. Look at how they parrot the Apple company line on these two product showcases all for the sake of “the get” – including an unfortunate Milli Vanilli / Ashlee Simpson moment:

There’s nothing quite like hearing a group of network talk-show hosts heaping praise on a piece of technology they barely understand to jumpstart your day. We think you’ll agree that listening to Matt Lauer loudly declare “It’s awesome!” and watching Meredith “You’re blowing the whole schtick” Viera vigorously mime licking the new MacBook Air is pretty wretch-inducing stuff — though Al Roker informing us that if you want the SSD, you’ll only have to pay “a little bit more,” was definitely one toke over the line. Thanks for ruining our breakfast guys. Every breakfast.

Digging In The Youtube Crates

Classic comedy will never die even if it’s mouthpieces do. I was reading ATP and his journey to LA and the nightmare of the roads and such and it reminded me of these Carson comedy classics – which I never thought would have been on YouTube. Enjoy them while you can!

Microsoft XP on a Cheap Dell PC

Dell 531sA while back I found a very good deal on a Dell 531 slimline – part of its 530 budget series computers. Like $300 good. And they’re having it again. The systems in question, and indeed the one I bought were shipped with FreeDos. I figured I could just install my own copy of XP or 2000 on it. The comparable systems shipping with Windows Vista cost more, plus there was no way I was going to deal with the frustrations of Vista.

When I got the machine and went to Dell’s site to download the sound card, mobo and graphics drivers, I noticed that they weren’t there. All they had were Vista drivers. WTF? Seems in an effort to push Vista on the consumer, Microsoft has forced PC Makers not to support XP on their machines. So to find the XP Drivers for this machine I had to hunt around the internet. Thank goodness I found them:

I’m now happily running XP on a cheap Dell and will never have to deal with Vista.

UPDATE: There was one missing device driver that showed up in SysInfo and Device manager as ACPI\AWY0001\2&DABA3FF&0 – which is the AMD Away Mode – download these 2 files and use the Device Manager to update the drivers.

One day after unseeded Jo-Wilfred Tsonga beat #2 Rafael Nadal in the other Australian Open semifinal, Rod Laver Arena saw another giant-killing as Novak Djokovic took out the undisputed #1 Roger Federer, he of the infinite match streak at non-clay majors and chasing down Pete Sampras’ record of majors wins:

Novak Djokovic reached his first grand-slam final with a stunning upset of Roger Federer, the top seed and reigning champion, at the Australian Open.

The Serbian triumphed 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 and will play Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, the 22-year-old Frenchman in Sunday’s final. Tsonga put out Andy Murray, the British hope, in the opening round.

Defeat ended Federer’s hopes of winning the Melbourne tournament for the third consecutive year and, similarly, he will have to wait to move within one of Pete Sampras’s record of 14 grand-slam titles.

There were several times when it looked like Federer would mount a charge and come back but each time he was answered. Djokovic’s first serve was nearly nonreturnable while he often turned back Roger’s serve. Had the match gone into the 4th set perhaps Roger’s fitness would have been an issue but on this night he didn’t have enough. Epic match.

Serbia might bag this Aussie Open with Ana Ivanovic and Djokovic both in the mens and womens finals, respectively.

It’s Giants vs Patriots in Super Bowl 42

Perfect PatriotsThe wind was making it hard to throw to the edges and Moss was being blanketed. But that didn’t stop the Patriots from finding other guys like Faulk and Moroney to put the gimpy Chargers out of their misery and come one step closer to making Mercury Morris eat his words.

The Chargers were too inept on offense – settling for too many FGs, and too vanilla on defense. That’s not the way to beat the Patriots. What they should have done, and what I’d like to see in the Super Bowl, is for them to be defended with a 1 or 2 man line. Line up in a typical 4-man front with 1-2 blitzers threatening, then at the snap, drop off into coverage to clog the passing lanes. And when you rush the 2 guys, rush them from the same spot overloaded on one side. Remember the Pats did that to the Colts’ pass-happy offense to great effect a few years ago? Now it’s the Patriots that have the pass happy offense.

Honestly, you will not beat the Pats playing straight up D. You have to gamble and guess, morph and disguise. Otherwise Brady will always know what he’s looking at and always find a Faulk open – who looked like he was just finding the open space in the zone. Norv (or rather Ted Cottrell) simply got outcoached. It’s ok – only 2 or 3 teams really were an equal match coaching and strategy wise all season.

Tynes game winning FGThe worse scenario for the Pats today was having to play the Giants. They are now the hottest team not named the Patriots. The Chargers were crippled and they didn’t get creative. The Packers played well, but just not well enough. Eli Manning (not Peyton) played well down the stretch and and will be rewarded with a spot in the Super Bowl. Scotsman Lawrence Tynes overcame 2 missed kicks to end the game in overtime with a game winning kick.

But here’s what I like about this most. Tiki Barber is left to stew over the fact that he left an average team and they became a great team all the while fending off his barbs (pun intended) about Eli not being a good QB. Thats called the Ewing Theory, buddy. A high profile player leaves an underachieving team and they suddenly rally and achieve something. And since there are no more games on NBC Tiki won’t have to answer to it.

Well, I guess you could say the same thing about the Giants going on a run after Jeremy Shockey’s injury, but since he’s from The U I’ll leave him alone.
