Televangelism And Mismanaged Money

Filed under: Al Gore, Oral Roberts, Televangelists, swindlers — Tags: , , , — webadmin @ 1:48 am

Televangelism and mismanaged money go together like gay-bashing closeted Republicans:

An Oklahoma City businessman said Tuesday he planned to donate $70 million to debt-ridden Oral Roberts University, days after the school’s president stepped down amid accusations that he misspent funds to support a lavish lifestyle.

Mart Green, founder of the Christian office and educational supply store chain Mardel, said he decided to help after watching media reports about the school, which recently revealed it was more than $50 million in debt. He never attended the university and does not know the Roberts family, he said.

“Let’s straighten the ship,” Green said at a news conference at the university. “Let’s get integrity. Let’s get trust built back, and the financial issues will go away.”

Green said he would immediately give $8 million, to be followed by a review of the university’s financial records that could take as long as 90 days. His family must approve the review before giving the remaining $62 million, he said.

Also Tuesday, the evangelical school’s regents said they planned to separate the finances and leadership of the university from the Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association and accepted the resignation of university president Richard Roberts, the son of the school’s founder and namesake.

The Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association is a nonprofit ministry that produces television and radio programs, including “The Hour of Healing,” among its many outreaches, according to its Web site.

The university has been under the ministry since its inception in 1963, an arrangement that critics say led to co-mingling of funds and a blurring of leadership roles.

Again – come on … how can you honestly believe this guy when he claims God needs him to get $10M by Friday or else … then deride Al Gore for his Global Warming hypocrisy? They’re the same people. Different issues, same money-generating misrepresentations. They may mean well somewhere deep inside, but it’s hard to acknowledge it when they’re living like kings. Bentley driving, jet flying, Armani suit wearing kings.

Trent Lott At It Again (That’s What He Said)

We’ve seen gay escort bloggers given White House press credentials and bathroom stall stings but if this turns out to be true it would be the icing on the cake. The Republican Party may have just added another gay-rights-hating NAMBLA member with the unexplained resignation of Trent Lott … now explained by an apparent gay escort scandal:

Many of his clients greatly appreciate his professionalism. In fact, according to one 66-year-old patron who reviewed him on a gay escort site, he is “a very reliable escort who keeps you informed.”

The boy happens to be real, and his “stage name” is Benjamin Nicholas. One of the politicos Big Head DC has learned he’s alleged to have been involved with is the married Sen. Trent Lott, 66, who unexpectedly announced his retirement on Monday. Lott is well-known to have been against a plethora of gay rights issues throughout his terms in Congress. He was also good friends with Sen. Larry Craig throughout his time in Congress.

Nicholas told Big Head DC today via e-mail that he didn’t want to go on the record to talk about his dealings with Lott, because, said Nicholas, “Trent is going through his fair share of scrutiny right now and I don’t want to add to it.” However, e-mail and other records confirm that the two have met on at least two occasions.

The best part about it is that it may have been the work of none other than Hustler’s Larry Flynt:

HUSTLER Magazine has received numerous inquiries regarding the involvement of Larry Flynt and HUSTLER in the resignation of Trent Lott. Senator Lott has been the target of an ongoing HUSTLER investigation for some time now, due to confidential information that we have received.

When will America learn – it’s the ones that are most vocal about gay hating that are the ones who are getting it on the side (and in other locations)!! We should have learned as kids with those wise words from the classroom: “He who smelt it dealt it.”

R.I.P. Sean Taylor

Filed under: Murder, Sean Taylor, Washington Redskins — Tags: , , — webadmin @ 1:34 pm

Sean Taylor24 Years old. He was a hell of a ball player both at The U and with the Skins, but had a lot of off-field troubles and even though he seemed to mellow and mature after his daughter’s birth, it’s possible his past associations are what led to the attack that ultimately took his life.

After struggling all day yesterday, Redskins safety Sean Taylor died this morning from his wounds after a shooting in his home Monday.

Taylor “did not make it through the night;” his femoral artery had been severed, and the bleeding “could not be stopped, just curbed.”

Sean Taylor MiamiThis is the second Hurricane shot to death in two years. Just tragic. To me it doesn’t look like a random act of violence – the previous burglary 8 days prior found a knife left on his bed. Imagine what might have happened if his girlfriend and 18 month old daughter were there alone. Anyway, as KSK says “let’s remember Taylor for what he was between the lines: namely a fearsome, ball-hawking hit machine that left a swath of crumpled receivers in his wake.” To that end:

From The Starting Five.

Toronto The New Buffalo?

Hmm – forget about internationalizing the NFL to London, the Buffalo Bills might be taking their game to Canada, eh? – at least only one game to start:

The CFL’s new commissioner thinks the NFL wants a team in Toronto, and he wants a piece of the action. Not sure what makes Mark Cohon think the NFL will be eager to align with the CFL.

I think the NFL is interested in expanding into Canada, but it would rather wait a couple of seasons and see what type of support Bills games will draw in Toronto.

The league will only reach out to the CFL if it’s deemed absolutely necessary.

Grey CupWhat I want to know is – if the NFL expands to at least one Canadian town, will we ever see cross-league games – using CFL rules – like we do in basketball? For all the North American glory? Probably not. Probably have to settle for a flag football game between the Bills and the Argonauts. But I would like to see someone challenge the NCAA as the NFL’s official feeder league.

Anyways, congratulations to the Saskatchewan Roughriders for winning the 2007 CFL Grey Cup (the 95th edition) 23-19 over their Labour Day and Banjo Bowl opponents the Winnepeg Blue Bombers. I’m sure the MVP and the MVC (Most Valuable Canadian) will be flush with endorsement offers soon.

Croatian Penis?

Filed under: Croatia, England, Euro 2008, Humor, Sillyness — Tags: , , , , , , , — webadmin @ 5:39 am

Funniest thing to come out of the game. Apparently, in the Croatian tongue, it’s real easy to confuse love and penis:

Tony Henry, the opera singer tasked with singing the national anthems before England’s game with Croatia earlier this week, has become an unlikely hero of the Croatian game after appearing to make a somewhat risque slip of the tongue while belting out the nation’s tune.

The singer, from St Albans, Hertfordshire, should have sung “Mila kuda si planina”, which translates roughly as “You know my dear how we love your mountains”. Instead, he appears to have sung “Mila kura si planina”, which, although moderately nonsensical, can be interpreted as “My dear, my penis is a mountain”.

Reaction To The Problems With English Football

Lots of interesting articles questioning the qualifications of Steve McClaren and the skill level of English footballers in a culture that perhaps doesn’t value the right qualities. Simon Barnes of the Times writes about McClaren’s desire to please the press rather than find his own way.:

It is not that the job is impossible. Eriksson took England to three successive quarter-finals and through three successful qualification campaigns. Of course the pressure is intense, that’s why the job needs a man of remarkable strength, one who is certain of what he wants, equally contemptuous of critics and flatterers, with the nerves of a burglar and a deep understanding of international football.

Such men exist. They are rare, which is why they command high salaries. The pressure is absurd, the criticism hysterical in many countries: we need not plume ourselves on being especially awful, save in our fascination with the sexual lives of footballing men. But what the job demands above all else is a self-confidence devoid of vanity. McClaren had the exact opposite.

This has been a woeful 17 months for English football. It looked like a disaster from day one and so it turned out. I don’t think any of us is in the least bit surprised about that. McClaren never had it: you could see it in the cut of his jib; above all, you could see it in his smile.

Michael Owen, who was injured and watched the game on TV, thinks that England succumbed to the pressure of the moment:

‘It came down to the pressure of making a mistake when it really mattered. If we’d won the games we should have, we wouldn’t have ended up putting that kind of pressure on ourselves. It was our own fault.

‘The best sportsman can deal with it, someone like Tiger Woods thrives on it.

‘When you play at this high level, 99% of your performance level takes place in your head and that puts a big onus in coping mentally.

‘When fear takes over, you start to do things wrong and take the easy option which in our case is lumping the ball forward to the front men.

‘I’m not absolving myself from blame just because I was not playing. What must be addressed as much as anything is our psychological preparations.’

Martin Samuel thinks that there’s a culture of fear in English Football:

Brooking talks up his skills programme, but there is little point in teaching a ten-year-old the Cruyff turn if he is expected to put it into practice on a full-sized pitch with his coach screaming at him to clear his lines. The whole process requires reform, not one executive aspect of it.

It is almost as if English footballers are out of practice in thinking about the game. Gareth Barry was required to anchor England’s midfield against Croatia, yet the statistics show that his touches of the ball were generally in more advanced positions than Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard, thus negating the plan to have them breaking forward to latch on to Peter Crouch’s knock-downs. Other countries, the Netherlands in particular, give the sport an intellectual centre. Yet in both games, Croatia’s midfield looked brighter than ours. Better educated. Better prepared. They knew what they wanted to achieve and had paid attention in class.

Whoever follows McClaren will need to be a strong personality. Some of the malaise within the English game, specifically at grass roots, is not his to change, so all that can be done is to work on removing the fear from the elite players. It requires a psychologist — José Mourinho or Martin O’Neill, thinking men who may approach the problem from a fresh angle, single-minded and unafraid.

And finally, Bobby McMahon confronts the idea that passion is the number one quality to look for in a player:

Passion – England (and often Scotland’s) answer to any football problem. Could someone please explain to me why so many British fans seem to believe that passion is some sort of differentiator between British sides and foreign teams?

How does that square with the foreign (particularly Latin) stereotype of being hot tempered and dare I say overly “passionate”? Isn’t the constant use of the word “passion” just another way of saying technically inferior and the only way that it can be covered up is running around more and trying harder? It may work in the short term but it has a limited shelf life.

Doesn’t it strike everyone as a bit odd that while British fans worship at the altar of passion that it is other countries – who apparently are not so passionate – produce teams that win the WC and European championships?
